Matts Leiderstam is known for his studious engagement with 18th and 19th century portrait and landscape painting. His works/exhibitions are formed after lengthy and intense periods of research of the area particular to or surrounding the exhibition location and often take the shape of a room for study or contemplation amongst a number of presented objects. These objects may be original/reproduced paintings relating to the history and culture of the area, slide projections or optical instruments such as field scopes which collectively offer the visitor an alternative or shifted position to look upon subtle situations and compositions; an alternative to the received notions of interpretation of images and particular histories.
